L-theanine is an amino acid present in nature and in particular in green tea leaves and in other species belonging to the genus Camelia and in some mushrooms of the Boletus badius species.

Its chemical structure has similarities with the structures of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamic acid, two very important neurotransmitters of our nervous system.

L-Teanina

L-theanine is the subject of several studies and to date it has been attributed the following properties:

  • Relaxing, sedative and anxiolytic properties; these properties seem to be attributable to the ability of theanine to act as an indirect substrate for the synthesis of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a neurotransmitter with an inhibitory action on the central nervous system, thus promoting relaxation. L-theanine is absorbed very quickly from the intestine and once it reaches the bloodstream it is able to overcome the blood-brain barrier, thus raising the levels of GABA with a consequent relaxing effect.

  • Effect on the nervous system and hypotensive properties, thanks to its ability to modulate the excitotoxic effects of glutamate which, if present in high concentrations, is responsible for hyperactivity of the synapses, particularly in the brain, with the onset of migraines, insomnia, dizziness, palpitations and hot flashes.

L-theanine from SUISSE NUTRA INGREDIENTS is an extract of green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze.) of high quality profile and can be used in any nutraceutical formulation.
