We are pleased to announce that Suisse Nutraingredients owns the exclusive distribution of Westland Milk Products’ Lactoferrin in Italy.

Lactoferrin is a glycoprotein naturally contained in milk, from which it is isolated and concentrated according to high-quality  production standards and also meets the Kosher and Halal requirements.

The product is made from excellent quality milk, contains no preservatives, antioxidants or food additives.

Thanks to its proven antimicrobial properties, lactoferrin is suitable for use in products intended to support the immune system, in sports products and in all nutraceutical preparations (maximum content / day: 200 mg, according to the indications of the Department of Health).

LACTOFERRIN

Lactoferrin, also known as lactotransferrin, is a glycoprotein with antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal action and belongs to the family of transferrin (proteins responsible for transporting iron in the blood).

Lactoferrin is present in breast milk, mainly in the colostrum (to protect infants from potential gastrointestinal infections) and in lower concentrations in transition and maintenance milk, but also in various mucous secretions, such as saliva and tears, secreted from specific exocrine glands; it is also found in neutrophil granulocytes, which are innate or non-specific immunity cells with defense functions against bacterial and fungal infections.

The antimicrobial activity is due to its high affinity for iron Fe3 + (lactoferrin is never saturated with iron) which by binding it, removes it from the metabolism of those pathogenic species that depend on it for their replication and adhesion to the mucous membranes (intestinal and respiratory).

Lactoferrin also has a direct bactericidal action thanks to its ability to damage the most exposed layers of the cell membrane of some GRAM negative bacterial species.

Studies are currently underway on the use of lactoferrin in the treatment of subjects suffering from Covid-19 infection. The preliminary results are very encouraging, but deserve further studies and insights as reported in the scientific documentation available and published to date.
